Looking for starter cars that get the best gas mileage for your buck? Here is a list of top rated fuel efficiency vehicles (plus bonus tips at the end!)

In today's market, young people are considering one factor much more when purchasing a car:  fuel economy. With the competition from hybrid and electric vehicles, major brands are rushing to create entry-level, gas- and price-friendly cars. These starter-class vehicles are built to meet those needs.

While hybrid or electric vehicles are often the best choices for fuel savings, they're usually steeply priced. If you want to save on overall costs, there are plenty of starter cars that get the best gas mileage for your buck.

Important note: remember to consider safety features. If you end up in a car accident, you'll want to be protected by quality manufacturing. Consider extended warranties and other protections for your vehicle as well.

Take gas mileage into your own hands

Believe it or not, your fuel costs can be minimized by taking certain precautions. If you want to increase fuel economy for the cars with the best gas mileage, consider the following tips and tricks.

  • Run on a full tank. Your engine runs best when working with a full tank of gas. Get into the habit of filling up once you reach the halfway mark. You also won't have to deal with running out of gas
  • Schedule regular oil changes. Having the proper amount of fresh oil in your engine will help reduce unnecessary strain and gas consumption. Also, always use the oil recommended in your owner's manual.
  • Keep your tires inflated. Uneven or under-filled tires can decrease fuel efficiency because the engine is working harder to move them along.
  • Don't listen to Sammy Hagar. Remember Hagar's infamous, "Can't Drive 55" rock song? Well, as it turns out, 55 mph is the optimum speed for saving gas.
  • Open up the windows. The colder you set your A/C, the more power and gas it uses. Get some fresh air instead.
  • Change your oil filter. If you change your oil instead of going to a mechanic, make sure you change the filter, too. A clogged filter can decrease your fuel efficiency by 20% if left unchecked.
