The internship program at Pekin Insurance provides experience for college students who are beginning to enter the workforce.
As we all know, there are many internships available around the world. I will never regret my decision to apply for a Human Resources internship at Pekin Insurance. The vast opportunities they have make the program unique and competitive with bigger companies. This internship has allowed me to get hands-on experience in the Human Resources field. Every day I am able to learn something new and utilize this information to better understand the career path I have chosen.
What Puts Pekin Insurance on Top?
The internship is an 11-week program that begins with a full day of orientation explaining the company’s mission, vision, and values statements. We learned about the history of Pekin Insurance and did many team building exercises which brought everyone closer together. The internship program offers many opportunities, including volunteering at local organizations; gaining professional knowledge about LinkedIn, benefits, and resumes; and networking with other interns at social gatherings after work.
During the course of the summer, each intern gets to spend one half day volunteering at a local organization. The catch? We get paid to do it! Knowing that I could help out a local community was something that put Pekin Insurance in front of other internships. They even offer a corporate volunteer program for full-time employees. It’s nice to know that a company offers this awesome perk.
Along with volunteering, the work-life balance that is offered to interns allows us to be flexible in our schedules and enjoy activities on Fridays that we may not normally have been able to. Summer hours consist of working 7:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Fridays from 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. With nearly a nine-hour shift Monday through Thursday, one would think that the days would feel long, but you are able to keep busy and attend meetings along with full-time employees which makes the days go by fast. You are able to see what you would be doing as an employee of the company.
As interns, we were fortunate enough to receive four different classes that tied to professional development. We learned about our different personality types in Real Colors training, heard a recruiter’s point of view on what our LinkedIn profiles should consist of, received feedback on our resumes, and were able to sit in on a benefits presentation. The social gatherings allowed us to visit Elevate Trampoline Park on a Friday afternoon, and we also went to Buffalo Wild Wings for some free food after work!
Managers and leaders alike create a sense of inclusion by welcoming the innovative ideas that interns bring to the table. With a younger generation getting their feet in the door, it allows for the flow of ideas that may not have been previously thought of. Interns get to work closely with their department to help assist with projects and better the company.
Meeting Other Interns
In the few months I have been here, I have made invaluable friendships with other interns and enjoy participating every Thursday in The Greater Peoria Economic Development Council mixers. It has been a great way to learn about other companies in the Greater Peoria area while hearing what their interns experience as well.
Many of the interns at Pekin Insurance spend Friday afternoons going to lunch together and hanging out on the weekends. Through the vast opportunities Pekin Insurance has to bring interns together, it has allowed us to remain very close, and these friendships will continue on into the future.
This internship has allowed me personally to gain so much knowledge about my future career in Human Resources. The culture of this company is family-friendly and allows continuous growth in your career field. From professionalism to social events, you are sure to have fun and learn a lot through the Pekin Insurance internship program!
