A Job Safety Survey Ensures a Safe Work Environment

A Jobsite Safety Survey conducted by a Pekin Insurance® Loss Control Representative is an important tool to analyze contractors and their safety efforts. The majority of all employee injuries occur at jobsites for contractors. The Jobsite Safety Survey can help the contractor identify uncontrolled hazards and potential weaknesses in the contractor’s overall safety program. Often the contractor and supervisor are at the jobsite on a daily basis and miss potential problems that the Loss Control Representative’s trained eyes can readily notice.

The most frequent hazards and/or safety violations that we find on the jobsite are:

• Housekeeping. Good housekeeping is important to reduce fall hazards for the contractor’s employees as well as hazards for the general public or subcontractors. Housekeeping also generally gives some insight into how successful the insured’s safety efforts are at the particular jobsite. Poor housekeeping almost always means other hazards are being neglected.

• Manual Material Handling. We look for proper lifting techniques, use of material handling devices when more than 50 pounds are being lifted, and proper staging of materials at a jobsite.

• Flammable Liquid Storage. Are flammable liquids properly stored at the worksite? Are gas cylinders properly stored and chained in an upright position?

• Electrical. All jobsites must use GFCI and/or equipment grounding conductor programs. This is key to eliminating electrical shock using power equipment. Additionally, extension cords should be in good condition and not present a trip or fall hazard.

• Fall Protection. Ladders must be in good condition and properly used. Scaffolding is a serious concern at jobsites; it must be properly erected. Toe boards and guardrails should be in place on scaffolds over 10 feet. Scaffolds should be erected on a firm and substantial surface.

• Personal Protective Equipment. Use of personal protective equipment is a key component to employee safety. Hard hats should be worn generally at all times. Safety harnesses may be necessary for work above ground. Safety glasses are also important when any grinding, sawing, or other particle-producing operation is being performed.

From a contractor’s standpoint, jobsites are the most important part of the work. It is where the majority of Workers Compensation and General Liability losses occur. At your next jobsite, make sure you review the above items to ensure a safe working environment.
